Designing for New Jersey’s Updated Energy Code – Part 2: Commercial Compliance

New Jersey’s updated Energy Subcode, which adopts ASHRAE 90.1-2022 for commercial construction and residential buildings four stories and above, took effect August 17, 2026, with a six-month grace period ending February 17, 2027. This session provides architects with a practical overview of the updated commercial requirements and how they affect the design process. Participants will explore ASHRAE 90.1-2022 and key New Jersey amendments, with a focus on changes to requirements for the building envelope, HVAC and mechanical systems, lighting and controls, electrical systems, metering, and renewable energy.
The session will also examine prescriptive and performance-based compliance pathways, the role of energy modeling, and strategies for coordinating energy code requirements across the design team.

▼Learning Objectives
- Identify the applicable New Jersey commercial energy code requirements and explain the role of ASHRAE 90.1-2022 and key New Jersey amendments.
- Describe key changes to commercial energy code requirements, including building envelope, HVAC, service water heating, lighting and controls, electrical systems, metering, and renewable energy provisions.
- Evaluate prescriptive and performance-based compliance approaches and explain how energy modeling can inform design decisions and demonstrate compliance.
- Coordinate energy-code requirements across architectural, mechanical, electrical, and energy-modeling documents to identify conflicts, gaps, and potential compliance issues during design.
- Apply New Jersey commercial energy code requirements to design scenarios and develop strategies for addressing compliance early while balancing energy performance, constructability, and project goals.
