Governor Hochul’s “SUNY and CUNY Reconnect” Initiative Includes Architecture-Related Programs

AIA New York State applauds Governor Kathy Hochul’s initiative, SUNY and CUNY Reconnect, which aims to make higher education more accessible and affordable for adult New Yorkers. The program, which launches in the fall of 2025, fully funds tuition and fees at SUNY and CUNY community colleges for eligible adult learners (ages 25-55) pursuing an associate’s degree in high-demand fields.

Expanding Access to Architecture-Related Education

As part of her 2025 State of the State agenda, Governor Hochul’s new “Next Generation NY Job Program” will support various academic programs, including those related to the architecture profession. This strategic investment acknowledges the vital role that built environment professions play in shaping the future of New York. By removing financial barriers, the initiative empowers a more diverse and inclusive generation of professionals in fields such as:

  • Architectural Design Studies
  • Architectural Technology
  • Computer-Aided Drafting & Design
  • Construction Management
  • Green Building Technology

This investment reflects a growing recognition of architecture’s essential contributions to community resilience, sustainability, and innovation.

Program Details

The SUNY and CUNY Reconnect initiative offers:

  • Free tuition and fees at public community colleges for eligible adult students pursuing an associate’s degree in high-demand fields.
  • Supportive services to help students complete their programs and successfully enter the workforce.
  • Expanded funding to help more low- and middle-class students attend college without debt.

Governor Hochul’s plan builds on the legacy of the Excelsior Scholarship, acknowledging that community colleges are often the most accessible and flexible entry point for students pursuing professional degrees.

At AIA New York State, we believe that early access to education in built environment professions is key to building a more equitable and innovative workforce. We are encouraged to see these programs recognized as a strategic priority, and we look forward to supporting students and educators as this initiative rolls out.
