Examine the ingredients for a code compliant building envelope and how they are incorporated into the 2020 NYCECC residential provisions.

The building envelope occupies a large portion of the Residential energy code because of its outsized impact on energy performance. As a huge driver of energy use, it’s critical that the envelope is designed and built to code. Crushing the Code NYC: Residential Envelope prepares building and design professionals in New York City to comply with the residential envelope requirements in the 2020 New York City Energy Conservation Code (NYCECC).
In this session, students will examine the ingredients for a code compliant building envelope and how they are incorporated into the 2020 NYCECC residential provisions.
By the end of this 2.5 hour training, participants will be able to:
- Explain how to identify the building thermal envelope and the different components that impact code compliance.
- Recognize the importance of the air barrier and discuss the latest industry strategies to create a tight building envelope for improved efficiency and occupant comfort.
- Describe the ways that heat flows through the building envelope and learn how to find or calculate the needed thermal resistance for code compliance.
- Explain code criteria that limits energy losses from windows.
