The Executive Mansion is Going Green!

NYS First Lady   NYS Executive Mansion

New York State’s First Lady Silda Wall Spitzer recently unveiled a new initiative “Greening the Mansion” which will bring new technology to the Governor’s Mansion to help cut its electrical energy consumption by half and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This project is part of Governor Eliot Spitzer’s energy plan to decrease the demand for electricity statewide by 15% by 2015.

“Greening the Mansion” will happen in several phases. Changes happening now at the Mansion include: replacing existing appliances with energy efficient ones, installing low flow showerheads, replacing light bulbs with energy efficient compact ones, using only non-toxic cleaning products and pesticides, replacing current lawn equipment with hybrid electric vehicles and purchasing organic and New York-grown produce.

The next phase will include installing solar panels over the parking lot, a building canopy and the roof of the pool house. By 2008, solar panels will produce 60,000 kWh/year and reduce electric energy consumption by 50%. When all of the phases are complete, it will save $25,000 a year in energy costs.

Capital funds from the state budget will not be used to make all of these changes. Instead, the mansion qualifies for the New York Power Authority’s state program for energy improvements and will apply for funding from NYSERDA. When the project is finished, the plan will be submitted to U.S. Green Building Council for potential LEED certification.

A “Greening the Mansion” Working Group started formulating the plan in February with representatives from the New York Power Authority, NYSERDA, OGS, Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and Randy Collins, AIA, Collins + Scoville Architects, PC. The Governor’s Mansion was built in 1856 in the Queen Anne style in downtown Albany and is a historical landmark.
