Local Component and State Leaders Attend Retreat
On May 8th the leadership of local components and AIANYS convened at the Kaatskill Mountain Club for two days of reflection, planning and setting the course for AIANYS in the next two years.
In their opening remarks Terrence E. O'Neal, President of AIANYS and Russell Davidson, President-Elect discussed the purpose of the retreat and the role each individual would play in the planning process. They explained that like the Institute, AIANYS would also combine strategic objectives in the areas of Advocacy, Community, Knowledge and Value. It was determined that during the 2006 retreat the group would concentrate on advocacy: public and government affairs. The secondary theme would revolve around discussions related to effectively communicating with the membership to further insure that they know what AIANYS is doing for them.
Those in attendance were divided into five working groups and assigned a discussion question. The questions addressed areas of concern as they related to involving more members and chapters in public advocacy, communicating with members, improving government advocacy and enhancing the relationship between all three areas of membership (National, State and Local).
Each working group reported on their discussions and ideas that were forthcoming from their talks. At the conclusion of the reports a determination was made on which of the ideas would be selected for action planning.
The morning of day two was spent refining each of the concepts and ideas into action plans that eventually would be formalized into the 2007- 2008 AIANYS Strategic Plan.
The retreat was concluded with a skill development lesson on how to write a position paper. This activity was included in the 2006 retreat to assist local components on how to address local lobbying and government affairs issues.
In the next few months AIANYS will be issuing the 2007-2008 AIANYS Strategic Plan.

Fellows Encouraged to Become More Engaged Within Association
John R. Sorrenti, FAIA
One of the things we have tried to do is have the Fellows become more engaged within the Association. To this end, we have initiated a Fellows event at every State Convention. This event is either a cocktail party or a breakfast with a noted architect with a tour of one of the buildings designed by the speaker. It is designed to have architects encounter special buildings as part of their convention experience, and is opened to all who attend the convention. Also at the convention we present a session on the Fellow demystification process. This session details what Fellowship is and how to apply for Fellowship. This session is opened to anyone who either wants to apply or is just interested in the process.
When a Fellow candidate has been working on their application, it is important for someone other than the sponsor to look over the submission and give helpful suggestions to enhance the presentation. We do have 2 committees in the state that do just that. The New York Chapter, for years has had a committee devoted to this but only recently, has the State put into place a committee to review portfolio submissions. If you are a New York Chapter member, their chapter reviews your submission. Any other member of the State organization, should contact one of the State committee members: Lee Bearsch,FAIA; Ann R. Chantreuil,FAIA; John P. Sullivan,FAIA; Delaine J. Jones, FAIA or John R. Sorrenti, FAIA, and we will set up a review process for you. Your submission may be reviewed several times while you are in the process of writing it to insure that you do not go too far off your mark.
We have created a Fellows archive at the AIANYS offices of various submissions if anyone would like to review what an approved portfolio looks like. We always have a Fellows cocktail reception at the National convention to welcome new Fellows. All are welcome to this event.

AIANYS Convention - October 19-21,2006 - Dr. Richard Jackson,M.D.,MPH to Open Convention
Russell Davidson,AIA and John Notaro, AIA, Chairs of the 2006 AIANYS Convention in Long Island have announced that Dr. Richard Jackson, MD,MPH will open this year's convention on Long Island.
About Dr. Jackson
In June 2005, Dr. Richard J. Jackson,MD,MPH received the Presidential Distinguished Executive Award from President Bush for his outstanding leadership and extraordinary achievement in service to the nation, and in particular to improving environmental public health. He is currently Professor of Environmental Health at the University of California , Berkeley School of Public Health. He has served in many leadership positions with the California Health Department, including as the State Health Officer answering to Governor Schwarzenegger. For nine years he was director of the Center of Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Environmental Health in Atlanta .
Dick Jackson is co-author of the book Urban Sprawl and Public Health , a 2004 book from Island Press. He has served on many medical and health boards, and in September 2005 he was selected to serve on the Board of Directors of the national American Institute of Architects AIA). His strongest public health interest is in developing the next generation of leaders in Public Health.
To Discuss Safe Buildings:
He will discuss buildings must be safe-no one should be injured because of a building's design. But a building's and a community's design can also increase the risk of disease. Today's diseases are chronic diseases, ones that affect us over long stretches of time. Diseases like Type 2 diabetes or osteoporosis can be prevented by more physical activity and weight-bearing exercise. The most prevalent disorder in America is depression, which can be aided by creating spaces that support social connectedness, walking, and good air and light quality. Good design is also important in reducing the grave dangers from greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. With over 30 years of experience and leadership in Environmental Public Health, Richard Jackson sees architects and planners as having great influence over human health in the 21 st century.
In addition to the 2006 Product Showcase, this year's Convention will also offer over 35 different seminars on Affordable Housing, Sustainable Design, Codes,
Practice Management and Technology. There will also be a series of prgrams geared towards New and Emerging Architects and Architectural Students.
