AIA New York State (AIANYS) is planning the 2007 Convention, October 4 – 6, 2007 at the Grand Hyatt New York in New York City. If you would like to be part of this exciting event by being a presenter please respond with your program proposal no later than March 30, 2007.

CONVENTION THEME:
THE PAST AS PROLOGUE

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of The American Institute of Architects, founded in New York in 1857, we look to the legacies of history to inspire the future, and call on the power of design to create healthier and more sustainable communities.

As the principal place of exchange of ideas and products since the Dutch founded New Amsterdam and New Netherlands in 1625, New York continues to expand in population and grow in diversity. Demolition and fire have removed most buildings constructed before the early 19th century, but street patterns and our neighborhood and town settlements trace their origins to the 17th century, and in some instances predate the European overlay.

New buildings fit within these constraints, learning from what has come before and improving upon the success of predecessors. Thus communities in New York State, more than most that have sprawled across landscapes throughout the Unites States, develop their most significant architecture in the immediate context of the past. As architects, we modify the assemblage, the collage, with each new structure, thereby enhancing livable communities magnified by density and rooted in the face-to-face values of proximity and interaction.

Past successes are a prologue to our future. Come to the AIA New York State Convention in New York City in October 2007 to honor what has been done and unveil what is to come.
