The International Code Council
Architects and others in the construction industry said goodbye to the old New York codes on July 1 when the 2008 New York City Codes went into effect across all five boroughs. The first major modernization of the city’s building codes in nearly 40 years; the 2008 New York City Codes are based on the 2003 International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas and Fire Codes developed by the International Code Council. The New York Statewide codes also are based on the I-Codes.
The International Code Council, a membership association dedicated to building safety and fire prevention, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states choose the International Codes, building safety codes developed by the Code Council.
