Tour of College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering
University at Albany

CNSEThe College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany is the first college in the world dedicated to education, research, development and deployment in the emerging disciplines of nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience and nanoeconomics. With more than $14 billion in high-tech investments, CNSE represents the world’s most advanced university-driven research enterprise, offering students a one-of-a-kind academic experience and providing over 300 corporate partners with access to an unmatched ecosystem for leading-edge R&D and commercialization of nanoelectronics and nanotechnology innovations.

CNSE’s footprint spans upstate New York, including its Albany NanoTech Complex, an 800,000-square-foot megaplex with the only fully-integrated, 300mm wafer, computer chip pilot prototyping and demonstration line within 85,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms. More than 2,700 scientists, researchers, engineers, students and faculty work here, from companies including IBM, Intel, GlobalFoundries, SEMATECH, Samsung, TSMC, Toshiba, Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, and ASML. An expansion now underway, part of which will house the world’s first Global 450mm Consortium, will add nearly 500,000 square feet of next-generation infrastructure, an additional 50,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms, and more than 1,000 scientists, researchers and engineers from CNSE and global corporations.

In addition, CNSE’s Solar Energy Development Center in Halfmoon provides a prototyping and demonstration line for next-generation CIGS thin-film solar cells. CNSE’s Smart System Technology and Commercialization Center of Excellence (STC) in Rochester offers state-of-the-art capabilities for MEMS fabrication and packaging. CNSE also co-founded and manages operations at the Computer Chip Commercialization Center at SUNYIT in Utica and is a co-founder of the Nanotechnology Innovation and Commercialization Excelerator in Syracuse.

The Good Life: Walking Tour of Historic North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY
This tour takes a unique look at the history of Saratoga’s elite.  The tour will highlight the grand Queen Annes along North Broadway, featuring homes built by Saratoga’s most prominent figures, such as Lucy Skidmore Scribner, George B. Cluett, Williams B. Gage, and Senator Brackett.

Two of Saratoga’s best-known resident developers, Henry Walton and Gideon Putnam, originally laid out Broadway during the early 1800s.  By 1854, North Broadway played host to many of the first full time residents in town.  Saratoga continued to grow through the late 19th century.  After a period of decline, when many of the properties were divided and houses were converted into apartments, separating homes from carriage houses, the area was saved through private re-investment.  North Broadway still captures the gilded age of Saratoga Springs through the variety of architectural styles including, Queen Anna, Italianate, Shingle style, Colonial Revival, and Romanesque Revival.
Please bring comfortable shoes and rain gear in case of inclement weather.

The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) opened its doors in 2008 and was hailed by the New York Times as a “technological pleasure dome for the mind and senses… dedicated to the marriage of art and science as it has never been done before.”

Founded by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, EMPAC offers artists, scholars, researchers, engineers, designers, and audiences opportunities for creative exploration that are available nowhere else under a single roof. EMPAC operates nationally and internationally, attracting creative individuals from around the world and sending new artworks and innovative ideas onto the global stage.

EMPAC’s building is a showcase work of architecture and a unique technological facility that boasts unrivaled presentation and production capabilities for art and science spanning the physical and virtual worlds and the spaces in between.

GLOBAL FOUNDRIES FAB 8.1 – The Challenges of Building a World Class, “Green,” Semi-Conductor Facility in New York State
Starting in 2009, the landscape of upstate New York was changed significantly when the GLOBALFOUNDRIES project, located on a 222-acre site in Malta, commenced.  This new, 1.6 million GSF, $4.2 billion facility, has been designed and constructed to exacting tolerances in order to manufacture processors for the semiconductor industry.  This project has been referred to as “regionally altering” and “game changing”, and not without due cause.  Along with the positive economic impact, this project is not only the largest construction project, but is also the largest sustainable project (two LEED certification candidates), to be conceived in New York State in the last 10 years.

This tour is a unique opportunity to tour key portions of a facility that will not be available again to the public with the Architect in charge of construction and the project’s LEED AP.   This tour will discuss the challenges faced in master planning, designing, and building this state of the art semi-conductor fabrication facility within the confines of the New York State code family; how a facility that uses extreme amounts of resources can meet the spirit of sustainability; and what a facility like GLOBALFOUNDRIES brings to the local economy.

The Spa: A Walking Tour of Saratoga’s Historic Race Course

The Saratoga Race Course is the oldest extant sporting facility in the country.  The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation has done considerable work in the past two years in conjunction with the New York Racing Association (NYRA), to conduct a Cultural Landscape Inventory and Architectural Resource Survey.  Much of the tours content comes from this survey.  It highlights the historic development of the racecourse and the upcoming $125 million capital improvement plans that NYRA is currently planning.

The historic Saratoga Race Course features the original 1847 trotting track and stables, now known as Horse Haven, and the 1892 Grandstand by Herbert Langford Warren, an icon on the City and racing.  Saratoga Race Course is unique compared to any other racecourse in the world, in that its development over 150 years can be seen through its architecture.  However, this presents unique challenges to NYRA makes plans to retain the track’s unique heritage, increase capacity and widen offerings, and improve maintenance and operating costs.
